Gyms are closed until further notice, but there’s still plenty of workouts you can do in your home with basic equipment. Here are a few ideas for cross-training workouts you can do at home.
Kettlebells
Before the shelter-in-place order, I was lifting weights 4-5 times a week at Gold’s Gym. Weights and gym equipment aren’t easy to bring home. It can be expensive, and there’s not a lot of room in the apartment for a new weight bench. Kettlebells are a great alternative.
I bought a 35lb kettlebell and a 62lb kettlebell, but all you need is one (I hardly use the 62lb). Here’s a great list of beginner kettlebell exercises from Onnit to start with.
Yoga
Yoga compliments running wonderfully. You’re getting plenty of cardio from running often, but how is your flexibility? Are you stretching often? Improve your mental focus and decrease your risk of injury with Yoga. As far as equipment goes, all you need is a mat.
There are so many yoga studios offering classes online right now. For $15 a month, you can live stream The Yoga Collective classes via Zoom plus access their entire library of workouts.
Full Body HIIT
You’re getting great cardio from your running schedule, but long distance running requires a consistent steady pace. Get short bursts of action with interval training.
Some workouts require a small investment, but you can do plenty of full body HIIT workouts without any equipment. There are also tons of free YouTube workout videos. Here’s a 30 minute HIIT video from Heather Robertson with some great exercises.
